The U.S. Model 1861 percussion Rifle Musket was made during the Civil War by the Springfield Armory and multiple contractors. This battle-used Model 1861 was made by Alfred Jenks & Son of Bridesburg, PA. All the Jenks rifle muskets are marked "BRIDESBURG" on the lock. It is one of 98,464 Jenks delivered during the war. This early Bridesburg rifle musket was manufactured in 1862. The 40" round 58 caliber barrel has a very good bore with bright, strong rifling. All the metal has a smooth brown patina with the bolster area and top of the lock having moderate firing pitting. The barrel V over P over eagle inspection and proof marks are visible. The lock is marked US over BRIDESBURG with an eagle to the center and 1862 at the tail. The swivels and ramrod are present. The stock is very good with a strong inspection cartouche on the left flat and another one forward of the trigger guard. It exhibits the dents, dings, and scrapes expected of an issue gun but presents very well overall. The action functions correctly. The Bridesburg rifle musket is a basic piece for any Civil War collection.
