Brown manufactured external extractor Ballard patent rifle. Interesting extra heavy barrel .44 caliber. Receiver is marked “Brown MFG Co. Newburyport Mass/ Ballard’s Patent/ Nov. 5, 1861”. Tang has been drilled and tapped for a peep sight. Wood is nicely figured walnut with an old repaired crack on forearm near external extractor. Bore has strong rifling with light frosting. A neat heavy barrel target rifle. Note: This rifle weights 14 lbs. and measures 1¼” from side flat to side flat at the muzzle. Barrel marked “No 44” on top flat.
