This British Pattern 1853 rifle musket appears to have been modified for use by native Indian troops. After the 1857 Sepoy rebellion the British decided that the native troops would be equipped with obsolete firearms. This Pattern 1853 rifle musket has an overall length of approx. 55". The 39" round barrel has been bored to 60 caliber smooth bore from its original 577 rifled caliber. Much of the original rifling is still visible. The barrel has a smooth blue-brown patina with light roughness in the bolster area. The inspection and proof marks are indecipherable. The lock is marked 1857 over ENFIELD at the center with a small crown over broad arrow to the right and crown over VR at the tail. The brass furniture are very good. The screw-fastened bands have a smooth brown patina. The stock is very good with a small age crack at the tail of the lock, the expected issue dents and dings, and no other chips or cracks. The ramrod, swivels, and nipple protector are present. This is a good overall example of a British military Pattern 1853 rifle musket.
