Dutch 1895 6.5x53R caliber infantry rifle produced by Steyr in 1897. Made for colonial service as indicted by the gas escape holes in the receiver. Non matching serial numbers. The bore has strong rifling and is dark in the grooves. The wood shows two arsenal patches in the butt stock. Captured by the Japanese during WWII. They installed a bayonet lug to use their Type 30 bayonet. Good overall condition and very rare! The butt stock has a repaired crack at the heel. Note: It is important to remember that captured and re vamped guns have a charm and collectability often overlooked by many collectors. Modern armies do not ordinarily capture and re-use these arms. Japan did this time and time again as a matter of policy. These may be Chinese model 98 and VZ24 and model 88 commission rifles as well as Siamese captured guns and in this case Dutch captured guns.
