Serial No. 23966, manufactured circa late 1941, chambered in 7.7x58mm, with a 26” round barrel. This early production Type 99 bolt-action rifle is believed to be a Series 1 rifle from the Nagoya Arsenal. The finish is thinning to a smooth grey patina, consistent with age and service use. The bolt and dust cover are matching to each other, but not to the receiver—suggesting either field replacement or arsenal-level mixing. The rifle retains key early-war features including the anti-aircraft wings on the rear sight and an intact mono-pod, both of which were later omitted as the war progressed. The Imperial chrysanthemum (mum) has been removed, a common practice during and after the war, especially during surrender. The hardwood stock shows honest wear and includes two drain holes; a feature found on earlier war Type 99 stocks. An honest and complete example of an early Japanese service rifle. Action is smooth and functions correctly.
