Serial No. 277985B, made in 1888, .22Short, 24” octagonal barrel. Bore has oxidation visible in the grooves, traces of rifling are present. Barrel is marked “WINCHESTER’S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./ -KING’S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29.1866 OCTOBER 16.1860- “Rear sight is missing its adjustable sighting notches, forward of receiver is marked “22 SHORT”. 3rd Model style dust cover is present. Majority of the finish has turned to a smooth brown patina with traces of original blue visible underside of the barrel between the magazine tube. Tang is marked “Model 1873” between decorative scroll. Brass carrier block marked “22 CAL/SHORT”, wood has expected nicks, dings and scratches from handling and usage wear. Wood loss is noted from the rear of the trigger guard to the lower butt plate. Action is smooth and functions correctly. Approximately 19,000 .22 caliber Winchester Model 1873’s were manufactured from 1884-1904.
