Serial No. 431435, made in 1889, .45-70, 32 ½” round barrel. Barrel finish has aged to a smooth brown/grey patina with faint traces of original blue. Breech block and lock plate show scattered surface oxidation; mottled case coloring is still visible in areas. Stock shows honest nicks, dings, and scratches consistent with field use. Action functions correctly. Originally developed after the Civil War, the Model 1884 was the final major iteration of the U.S. “trapdoor” single-shot rifle series. It featured the Buffington rear sight and continued in service into the Spanish-American War era with National Guard and reserve units.
