U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle .50-70 (58974)

Serial no. 38722. Manufactured circa 1868–1870 by Springfield Armory, chambered in .50-70 Government,32 ½" round barrel. The bore is bright and shiny with strong, well-defined rifling noted throughout. The barrel remains in the bright while the receiver, breechblock, and lock plate retain their black finish now thinning evenly to a smooth grey patina consistent with age. The Model 1868 represents one of Springfield’s early Allin-conversion trapdoor rifles, marking the U.S. Army’s transition from Civil War-era muzzleloaders to metallic cartridge arms. The stock has been lightly refinished with faint cartouches still visible. Overall condition is very good for the model, presenting as a well-maintained example of an important early U.S. cartridge service rifle. The action functions correctly.
