U.S. Model 1841 percussion “Mississippi” Rifle. By George W. Tryon of Philadelphia. The Mississippi rifle got its name due to its use during the Mexican-American War by a Mississippi regiment commanded by Jefferson Davis. The overall length is approximately 48½”. The 33” round .54 caliber barrel has a fine, bright bore with strong rifling. Barrel has a smooth brown patina, except in the bolster area where there is light pitting, and is marked “US/JH/P” at the breech. It also has small “H” sub inspection stamp on the left flat, side plate, and trigger guard. The lock has a gray patina. It has “Tryon/US” at the center and “Philada/PA/1844” at the tail. The hammer has most of its original blue finish. The bands, trigger guard, patch box, and buttplate show a nicely aged brass patina. The stock is very good with a scattering of issue/use dents and dings and a 1” missing chip on the left at the barrel between the bands. There are two strong cartouches and the spare nipple is in the patchbox. The two swivels and ramrod are present. The action functions correctly. Out of the approximately 91,800 Mississippi rifles, made by five manufactures, Tryon made the fewest, 5000. This is a nice example of a Mexican-American War Mississippi rifle made by the hardest to find manufacturer. It’s good for a Mexican-American War or Civil War collection.
