The Springfield, Manila, and Rock Island Arsenals altered approx. 8,000 30 U.S. caliber (30-40) Krag carbines (mostly 1899 Models like this one) to Constabulary configuration between 1906 and 1916. In addition to the Philippine Constabulary, these interesting guns were supplied to ROTC and other school units. The alteration consisted of placing the carbine in a shortened (by 8") Model 1898 rifle stock (which had to have the lightening cut in the barrel channel filled and the forend worked down for the front band), turning the carbine muzzle down to fit the Krag or Model 1905 bayonet, and reforming the front band to properly fit the barrel. This Krag Philippine Constabulary carbine is one of the very desirable ones that was altered by the Springfield Armory as evidenced by the very nice J.F.C. stock cartouche. It has a correctly altered stock, muzzle, and front band and is equipped with the Model 1902 rear sight. The rods and oiler are in the butt. The bore is excellent with bright, strong rifling. The metal is a pleasing blue-brown overall. The stock is fine with very light issue dents and dings, a strong cartouche, and no chips or cracks. The firing proof is light but visible. The action functions correctly. This is one of the nicest Phillipine Constabulary Krag carbines we have seen, especially for a Springfield-altered gun.
