NSN. Made circa early 1860s. Approximately 65 caliber with a 7” barrel. This is an unusual confederate altered handgun made out of an Enfield musket. The barrel is lightly engraved “S. Sutherland/ Richmond VA” According to noted confederate expert and author William Albaugh, Samuel Sutherland was known as the armorer of the south and operated under the trade name “Southern Importing House”. He was a well known gunsmith and dealer in Richmond, Va. During the Civil War, Sutherland repaired and altered guns for the state of Virginia and the Confederacy.
