Rare P.W. Porter Second Model revolving turret rifle. In fine condition, the overall length is 46½”. The 28” octagon .50 caliber barrel has a very good bore with scattered pits. These percussion revolving turret rifles made for P.W. Porter, by G.P. Foster of Taunton, MA. The barrel is marked address “P.W. Porter/ New York” and “P.W. Porter’s / Patent/ 1851”. Metal has a smooth brown patina. Stock is very good, no cracks or chips with a few storage/ use dents and dings. The serial number, “442”, is on all major parts. This rifle has it all: action works correctly; removable u-shape turret cover is present (usually missing); percussion cap mechanism is complete. Front and rear sights are offset to the left, to clear the cylinder. The action is operated by a lever. Cycling the lever cocks the side mounted mule-ear hammer, revolves the turret into firing position, and moves a percussion cap into alignment with the hammer. The turret holds nine shots. This is a marvelous example of an early American revolving rifle and a tribute to P.W. Porter’s mechanical genius. Missing from all but the most advanced collections, especially given that it has the turret cover!
