This is a confederate sword made by Houston, Tx maker J. C. Wilson. The blade is etched on one side to “Captain J. F. Foster Co. D. 10th ARK. REGT>” The reverse side of the blade is marked “REBEL” which is highly unusual as very few pieces are known marked like this. The grip has been expertly rewrapped using the correct style leather and twisted wire. The 10th Arkansas served in several battles including Shiloh, and Baton Rouge. The unit was captured at the Siege of Port Hudson. After Port Hudson, the unit was reorganized into a cavalry unit. The unit was paroled in Jacksonport, Arkansas on June 5th 1865. Captain James Thomas Foster was born in Greensville County, Va in 1831. After the war Foster went to medical school and became a doctor. He died in 1898 in Boonville, Arkansas.
