A handsome Shin-Shintō era tanto with a blade measuring 9 11/16 inches. The blade shows some cloudiness and would benefit from a professional polish, but retains good shape and period character. The mounts are of very fine quality: the saya and tsuka are covered in samegawa (ray skin), with the tsuka tightly wrapped in white ito. The fuchi and kashira are decorated in shakudō with gilt floral motifs, and the menuki are worked in mixed metals with fine gilding. The tsuba is a round iron plate with gilt accents depicting a rabbit among grasses. The kozuka and kogatana are included, the handle decorated en suite with the other fittings and the blade showing engraved designs. Overall, a high-quality presentation tanto, combining a Shin-Shintō blade with very attractive fittings. Measurements: • Nagasa (blade length): 9 11/16” • Period: Shin-Shintō (late Edo into 19th century) • Condition: Blade cloudy, in need of polish. Mounts excellent with rich detail and patina
