Serial No. 12877, made in 1876, 44-40, 24” round barrel marked “WINCHESTER’S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN.CT./KINGS-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16.1860” No caliber marking is visible forward of the receiver indicating it is chambered in 44-40. Bore has scattered oxidation visible in the grooves with strong rifling still present. Barrel is a smooth mottled brown and grey patina. Receiver has traces of original blue in protected areas. Tang has been drilled and tapped for a Vernier peep sight; “Model 1873” is present. Brass carrier is unmarked as 44-40 was the only caliber at the time. First model dust cover with oval checkered thumbprint is still present. Stock has handling and usage marks visible, action functions correctly with main spring starting to becomes soft.
