Made circa 1790s. 48 caliber bores with 12” barrels. The barrels are marked “Boutet Director Artiste / Le Directoire Executif Au General de Brigade Kellerman” Both barrels were refinished long ago and show some light polishing. Each barrel has gold inlays near the lock and a gold barrel band on the swamped muzzles. Each lock is polished steel with borderline engraving. Each lock is marked Boutet / Director/ Artiste” The furniture on each gun is exquisitely engraved polished steel. The checkering on the stocks remain sharp. The stocks have been lightly cleaned. These guns come in an original case with all the original accessories. The top of the box has a gold embossed green leather top with the inscription “Donne Par Le Directoire/ Executif AU General De/ Brigade Kellerman/ Nicolas Noel Boutet/ Directeur Artiste” This was done at a later date, but is done in the style as the originals. General Francois Christophe De Kellerman was a French General who supported the French Revolution. In 1793 at the battle of Valmy, General Kellerman made a bold move taking position on a exposed Hill against the Prussian Army, and was victorious in the battle. He was loyal to Napoleon and although he was retired, he was placed in the Senate, then Head of the Senate before being named a Marshall of France in 1804 and the Duke of Valmy in 1808. The title of Marshall is only reserved for a select few and has been awarded sporadically throughout the French history. Only 27 titles of Marshall were awards to Marshall Kellerman. This is a very fine historic Set of Pistols by the very finest French gunsmiths!
