NSN, circa 1918, .30-06, 31" round barrel. Metal has started to thin to a brown patina, receiver has standard WWI markings with "CAL 30.06" and "Eagle Head". Bore is good with light frosting visible in the grooves, rifling remains strong. Stock has light handling wear and has Flaming bomb/ U.S. forward of the trigger guard. American made Mosin-Nagant rifles like this one armed most of the 4,500 U.S. Army soldiers of the 339th Infantry Regiment who formed the backbone of the Archangel Expedition This task force traveled to Russia in September 1918 as a part of the U.S. intervention against Bolshevik revolutionaries.The men of the 339th Infantry were ultimately nicknamed “Polar Bears” in recognition for how quickly they mastered the bitter cold, & they fought Russian communists more than a century ago using the same Mosin-Nagant rifle that had defended the Romanov dynasty since 1891.
