This interesting flintlock musket appears to be from Northern Europe. It has characteristics found on Germanic, Dutch, and Scandanavian flintlock muskets. The .70 cal, 41 1/2” smooth bore barrel has a moderately oxidized bore. It is in original flint. The barrel and lock are toned to a mild pewter gunmetal patina showing some scattered lightly cleaned minor pitting and remnants of oxidation staining. The lockplate is distinctive. The bottom edge of the plate is slightly beveled with a subtle pinch below the frizzen spring screw and the reinforced neck of the cock with an ovoid piercing. The top of the frizzen is dented. The detachable pan is brass along with the barrel bands, flat sideplate and triggerguard toning to an even patina. The triggerguard is attached to an iron tang and the buttplate is also iron. The small parts show a few scattered small inspector-type marks that are mostly indecipherable. A small “2” is stamped atop the breech and the heavy front double-band appears to be stamped with a small “FER” (or FERR or FHRR). The smooth walnut stock is in very good plus condition having darkened from the years and showing the expected scattered light dings and handling marks, a few mild abrasions and some shrinkage around the buttplate. The initials “LBH” are carved in large letters along the right side butt and the arm is equipped with sling swivels and includes a trumpet-shaped ramrod. The lock is crisp and functions well. This flintlock musket is worthy of further research. It will nicely fit your European martial flintlock collection.
