This approx. 62 caliber smooth bore percussion musket conforms closely to the British pattern 1858 musket which was produced for use by native troops. The overall length is approx. 54.25". The 39.125" round smooth bore barrel has a fair bore with light roughness. The exerior of the barrel is bright mixed with brown stains and with light pitting in the area around the nipple. The barrel has Birmingham proof marks and 25 bore stamps. The rear band has a sighting notch. The lock and hammer have edge lines and the lock is marked 1863 over TOWER at the center and with a crown at the tail. The lock and hammer have a smooth brown patina. The brass furniture is very good with an even aged patina. The stock is good with issue dents and dings, E over 17 on the left flat, and the maker's name, JOHN MARSON, on the underside of the butt. The swivels are absent and the ramrod is present. With the exception that the hammer can be released from half cock, the action functions correctly. These interesting muskets were obsolete when they were manufactured. The British armed native troops (India, Egypt, etc) with them while keeping the more modern firearms for the regular army.
