This early Pattern 1853 .577 caliber percussion rifle musket is dated 1854 on the lock. The 39" barrel has a vey good bore with strong rifling. The gun is bright with scattered brown staining. The brass buttplate, trigger guard, escheutcheons, and nose cap have an even age patina. The barrel does not have visible proof marks. The lock has a crown over VR at the tail and 1854 over TOWER at the center (the markings are visible but light). These markings are associated with Birmingham made guns. It also has the early hammer with the curl. The stock is good with no cracks or chips. It appears to have been lightly sanded. The bands are screw-retained. The sights are intact, the front swivel is present, and the ramrod is present. The action functions correctly. This is a good example of the rarely-seen early Pattern 1853 rifle.
