This U.S. Model 1816 69 caliber flintlock musket was manufactured in 1827 by Marine T. Wickham o fPhiladelphia for the City of Philadelphia. The 42" barrel has a good bore with light to moderate roughness. All metal is bright with scattered dark staining. The top mounted bayonet stud is numbered 77. The breech is merked CITY over PHILADA in an arc. The tang is ligtly marked 1856, the date of alteration to percussion. The lock is fine and is marked U.S. over M.T. WICKHAM in an arc in the center and PHILA over 1827 at the tail. The musket is a well-executed reconversion to flintlock. The stock is very good with traces of the inspector's caartoche visible. It has a period repair at the barrel tang and light handling dents and dings but no chips or cracks. The ramrod is a replacement. The bands are good and the U.S. marked buttplate is very good. The rear swivel at the trigger guard is absent. The action functions correctly with a very heavy trigger pull. These City of Philadelphia muskets are rarely seen and this one presents well.
