The first USMC ontract for H&R Model 65 training rifles was for 4,000 rifles. This Model 65 rifle, serial number 3318, was most likely one of the rifles delibered under this contract. These early rifles did not have any U.S. property or inspection marks. The 23" 22LR barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. The left side of the barrel is marked MFG. BY HARRINGTON AND RICHARDSON ARMS CO. over WORCESTER, MASS. U.S.A. with 22 LONG RIFLE ONLY below and to the rear. The top of the receiver is marked MOD. 65 - H & R REISING 22 CAL. over HARRINGTON AND RICHARDSON ARMS CO. over WORCESTER, MASS. U.S.A. The gun has approx. The receiver has what appears to be the correct Redfield peep sight installed. 98% of its dull blue wartime finish with the magazine being parkerized. The stock is excellent with no cracks or chips but it has been sporterized with a white line Bishop buttplate and a plastic white line grip cap. The stock has been recontoured with a nicely executed cheekpiece. The front swivel is present but the rear is absent. The action functions correctly. This is a very nice example of the early Model 65. Use it as is or find an original unaltered stock and add it to your military rraining rifle collection.
