This W.L. Evans contract U.S. Model 1816 flintlock musket is dated 1830. Evans supplied approx. 5,000 muskets to the government circa 1825 to 1830. The 42" 69 caliber smooth bore barrel has a good bore with light roughness throughout. The barrel still shows much of its brown finish with scattered dark spots and light freckling around the touch hole. It is marked at the breech with an LS (Luther Sage), US and impressed P proof mark. The lock, which is a mix of brown and gray, is marked W.L.EVANS over an eagle over V. FORGE at the ceenter and 1830 at the tail. The internal lock parts have an X assembly number. The barrel tang is also dated 1830. The bands, triggerguard and buttplate are mostly a smooth dark brown. The front sight blade on the front band is slightly dented. The stock, with an old added finish, is very good with good edges, no cracks or chips and an visible LS cartouche. the swivels and ramrod are present. The action functions correctly. This much better than average U.S. Model 1816 contract musket is ready for your Mexican War or US flintlock musket collection.
