The 58 caliber percussion U.S. Model 1863 rifle-musket was the primary Union infantry arm during the later part of the Civil War. This Model 1863 is a Type II with the barrel band springs. The 40" round barrel has a good bore with visible rifling and with some firing roughness. The front and rear sight are present. All the metal has an even brown patina. Light firing pitting in the bolster area obscures the barrel inspection marks. The lock is nicely marked with the U.S. over SPRINGFIELD with the eagle just forward of the hammer and 1863 at the tail. The swivels and ramrod are present. The stock is very good with no cracks, a couple of chips at the bottom of the ramrod channel. a visible cartouche on the left flat, and light to moderate overall usage wear. The action functions correctly. This rifle-musket is a must for any Civil War collection.
