Simeon North of Middletown, CT, produced 19,374 Model 1816 Flintlock Pistols for the U.S. Army between 1817 and 1820. The prior Model 1813 was 69 caliber. The caliber of the Model 1816 was reduced to 54. This pistol's 9 1/16" round smoothbore barrel has a very good bore. It is marked P over US at the breech. All the metal is bright with a smooth even very light brown patina. The lock features the early marking of S. NORTH in an arc over an eagle with US at the sides and MIDLn CON in an upward arc below. The stock is fine with sharp edges, no cracks or chips, a strong JH cartouche on the left flat, and scattered light usage dents and dings. The ramrod appears to be original. The action functions correctly. With the exception that the cock can be released by a trigger pull at half cock, the action functions correctly. The Model 1816 flintlock pistol is a must for any early U.S. martial pistol collection.
