The Model 1840 was the last of the U.S. flintlock muskets. This U.S. Model 1840 musket was manufactured in 1842 and issued to the State of New Hampshire. The original 42" barrel has been shortened to 32" and the gun has been configured to look like the extremely rare Model 1840 Flintlock Musketoon (See Flayderman 9th Edition, page 558). The 69 caliber round barrel has an excellent bore. It is marked with the V over P over eagle at the breech. The left barrel flat is stamped NH. The barrel tang is dated 1842. All the metal is bright with very light spotting. The lock has the eagle over US at the center and SPRING over FIELD over 1842 at the tail. The shortened stock is fine with no cracks or chips. It is marked A.F. CHASE on the left flat (also the butt plate) and has been thinned considerably at the butt (including the butt plate) and comb. The butt width is approx. 1.125". The action functions correctly. The great majority of the Model 1840 muskets were altered to percussion. About the only Springfield Model 1840's that escaped alteration were the NH guns. This very interesting original flint variant is priced at about half of what a complete and original Springfield Model 1840 would bring.
