A very handsome presentation grade 1850 Staff & Field Officer’s sword and scabbard by “Emerson & Silver, Trenton N.J.” and so marked on the ricasso of the blade. The other side of the ricasso has the Emerson & Silver Keystone stamp on it. The sword is very handsome with a cast silver grip with raised stars alternating with ribs. The guard is very interesting. It has the letters “U.S.” normally found on Staff & Field sword baskets, but below that is an Eagle rising from flames, or a Phoenix rising from flames. The blade is very handsome, with a large Union Shield over a trophy of arms with a US flag in it. The U.S. on the other side is relatively huge, and very handsome. The blade is also etched with vines and florals. The scabbard is plain black leather with brass mounts. Dimensions: The blade is 31 inches long, and the sword overall is 39 inches long. The hilt is excellent. The upper part of the blade with the etching is very good and better. The point and area near it have the remnants of old stains, with some pitting right at the point. The scabbard shows wear, with numerous small dents on the brass mounts. There is a brown leather patch sewn into the scabbard body just above the drag.
