This pistol started as an Austrian Model 1851 tube lock cavalry pistol. About 1866, Austria sold a large number to gun firms in Belgium and England. This pistol was altered in England. Having a market for flintlock pistols in Africa and South America, the tube lock action Model 1851 pistols, for which there was no demand, were altered to flintlocks. This required a new hammer and frizzen and entailed a new Birmingham proofs and 16 gauge mark of the on the barrel at the time the alteration was done. The overall length is approx. 17". The approx. 9 7/8" round 67 caliber smooth bore barrel has an excellent bore. In addition to the Birmingham proofs the top of the barrel is marked CII. The barrel is bright with light freckling. The lock has the Austrian Vienna proof mark at the tail and 853 (1853) at the center. The lock and hammer are bright with light freckling. Unlike the Belgian altered guns, the Birmingham pistols feature a brass pan and reinforced hammer. The brass nose cap, trigger guard, butt cap with swivel and ring, and side plate have an even aged patina. The stock is fine with sharp edges, no cracks or chips, and very light usage wear. The ramrod is present. The action functions correctly. Not many guns were back-altered from percussion to flintlock. Don't miss this unusual Birmingham-altered pistol!
