Rare “Jacobs Rifle” by Swinburne & Son. Designed and developed by General John Jacob, British Army, whom was commander of the Scinde Irregular Cavalry. The Jacobs Rifle became known for accuracy at long distance. Approximately 900 were issued to officers and men. After General Jacobs death in 1858, many of the rifles were returned to military storage and later sold on the commercial market. Other English makers made their own variation of the Jacob’s Rifle for the commercial market. This rifle by Swinburne, the original contractor has commercial alterations such as a rifle barrel on left and smooth bore barrel on the right. The rifle, now a combination shotgun / rifle, has a 3-folding leaf rear sight with no bayonet lug under the barrel for a massive 30” bayonet which the purely military version has. Bannerman in New York City sold these as “Elephant Rifles” in 1907. The patch box correctly marked “Jacobs Rifles” There is more information on this most unusual rifle involving the history of both the gun and it’s use under General Jacob. Condition is very good.
