This J.P. Murray Confederate Civil War percussion rifle is configured like the U.S. Model 1841 "Mississippi" rifle. The overall length is approx. 48.75". The 33" round 58 caliber barrel has a dark bore with strong rifling. The barrel has a smooth brown patina with roughness between the front band rings and in the bolster area. There are no visible markings on the barrel. The brass front sight has a hole through the center. The gray-brown lock and hammer have roughness throughout. The lock is marked J.P. MURRAY over COLUMBUS GA. All but the "J" is visible. The stock is good with issue dents and dings, some wood loss along the ramrod channel, a small chip at the rear of the barrel tang, and a chip-dent in the same area. The brass furniture, which is very similar to the Murray artillery musketoon, is very good. It does not appear that there were ever any sling swivels. A replacement ramrod is present. The action functions correctly. Confederate J.P. Murray rifles are rarely encountered.
