This unmarked .40 caliber rifle appears to be from Northern New York state. The overall length is approximately 48”. The 32” octagon barrel has a very good bore with strong rifling. The barrel has a blue/brown finish with some mottling. The two flats adjacent to the top flat have a decorative mortice that runs for approximately 19” from the muzzle. The gray/brown back action is unmarked. The hammer has light decorative scrolls. The bolster is carved in the shape of a snail shell. There is a decorative band around the action where it meets the barrel. The left side and bottom of the ramrod channel are dented just forward of the action. The highly figured and checkered butt stock is fine. It is matching feathered walnut. The trigger guard has a decorative ridge running its length. It ends in a scroll. There is a screw-in lollipop rear sight on the tang. The action functions correctly. The fine rifle, with its false muzzle and bullet start, would be a great addition to any percussion single shot target rifle collection.
