Johan Adam Kuchenreuter II Percussion Side by Side With Rifled Barrels. Very unusual as it is not the more often encountered “Buck and Ball” guns. In this very fine gun the right barrel is deeply rifled for ball or slug and the left barrel is lightly rifled for ball or shot. Both triggers are adjustable set triggers. So, both barrels have the capability of shooting deer etc. and the lightly rifled barrel used for birds or with light rifling used with ball or slugs. Barrels are 26” and overall length is 43”. Barrel rib is flat file cut to resemble the Damascus pattern on the barrels. Masterfully done! The rear sight is a fixed rear leaf and two folding leaves. Front sight is a ramp silver blade. Bore diameter is .58 at the muzzle. Breech has gold line accents and rib at breech has the Kuchenreuter horse and rider. Breech plug and upper grip tang are scroll and floral engraved. Upper grip tang has a folding engraved tang sight that when folded fits flush in the tang. The hammers are scroll and floral engraved and have engraved hammer safeties. The butt plate tang is engraved, as is the beautiful scalloped patch box. The central cartouche is of two hounds chasing a stag. The stanchion is engraved in the same motif as the other metal parts to include the finial of the trigger plate and the finial of the ramrod aperture. Between the two finials is a small silver roundel with a crown and initials or cypher. The trigger guard is of a lighter color, inlaid in engraved metal to reinforce the bow while the tail of the guard is carved in Rococco flourishes. The left side of the stock is carved in relief depicting a stag, two hunters with rifles and two hound all in a forest glen. The locks are engraved in intertwining scrolls and floral patterns. Lock extensions feature three hounds on a running boar on one side and two roe deer on rocky terrain. The name I. Adam Kuchenreuter is inlaid in gold around the curvature of each hammer. Gun is fitted with sling swivels. Johan Adam Kuchenreuter II was born in Regensburg in 1822 and died in 1898. The long line of Kuchenreuter gun makers is legendary. This is a beautifully made gun and all the fine touches are present. Made for royalty.
