Rare Spanish Gendarmerie Flintlock carbine by Fernando Arana. Stock lists Arana working 1730-1770. Top barrel flat marking "Por Fernando Arana” In flowing script. The lock is likewise marked. Barrel length is 21.5” and overall length 38.5”. Smoothbore with muzzle measuring .70 caliber with a captive guide rod. This is a very well-made cavalry carbine. The pan is double brideled. The cock is reinforced at both the upper and lower curvatures. Left side of stock has a sling bar. The gun has a marking we found when you take the barrel out of the stock "De Herraduras” which means From Horseshoes. The Spaniards believed that steel made from well used horseshoes was of stronger steel due to years of stress. This marking is found in both Spanish and Mexican weapons. The inside of the lock has the parts finished with fine accents that on normal locks would not exist. The extra fine work in this carbine puts it in a class above. The Gendarmerie in this case would be special cavalry assigned to protect higher ranking persons and members of royalty. Rare and shows extra quality work!
